Coronation Street star breaks silence after quitting soap – admitting ‘whirlwind’ exit is ‘bittersweet’ as she films final scenes

She’s set to wave goodbye to Weatherfield after it was announced she’d be making a shock departure from the ITV soap last week after a three-year stint.

Now, Channique Sterling-Brown, who is best known for her role as Dee Dee Bailey, has finally opened up on how she feels about waving goodbye to Coronation Street.

The actress, 28, stepped down despite being involved in some of the show’s biggest storylines in recent months, taking centre stage alongside show villain Joel Deering.

Soon, she will be filming her exit scenes that are expected to play out later this year.

Taking to social media to confirm the news, Channique shared a series of photos of herself in character as Dee Dee, smiling, crying and flashing a scowl.

She penned to her fans: ‘After three whirlwind years of Dee-Dee Bailey, I’ve decided to say farewell to the cobbles.

‘Bittersweet to be saying goodbye, but I am so excited for pastures new and enjoying the end of playing Princess Diana and her many expressions.’

Last week, an insider revealed to The Express: ‘Posters are up around the Corrie set behind the scenes, it is common knowledge that Channique is going, and cast have been informed.’

Another source added to The Sun that it was the actress’ choice to step back, adding: ‘It was Channique’s decision to go and she told bosses some time ago.

‘She’s hugely talented and ambitious and the world will be her oyster.’

Channique has been part of the biggest storylines on the soap over the past three years, taking centre stage alongside show villain Joel Deering.

Dee Dee fought hard to expose evil Joel’s antics, that saw him grooming and abusing young women, before his death on the series.

She went on to give birth to his baby after deciding against having an abortion, and was the victim of a medical negligence case due to racism.

Because of complications during her birth, Dee Dee had to undergo hysterectomy surgery, and has since been raising daughter Laila with the help of brother James.

Coronation Street’s one of longest running stars makes shock exit

Recent scenes have also seen Dee Dee developing a relationship with soap newcomer Ollie, played by Raphael Akuwudike.

It would mark yet another exit for the ITV soap, who last week waved goodbye to one of it’s long-running stars, Sally Ann Matthews’ Jenny Connor.

The character, who first joined the ITV show in 1986, was seen packing up all their things and saying goodbye in emotional farewell scenes.

It came as a shock to viewers, as the low-key storyline saw the character decide to move away with the help of a one-way ticket bought just hours before.

The exit for the character followed a long spiral since losing the role as the landlady of the Rovers Return – when the pub was put on the market earlier this year.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
